In 1958, Chuck Dederich founded a self-help group called Synanon, where addicts could help other addicts get clean. It was massively successful and the key to its success lay in a form of therapy called The Game. But as Synanon gained more and more attention, things began to get weirder and weirder. People without addictions started attending so they could play The Game. Charles progressively became more and more controlling and eventually, what started as a supportive, tough-love regime turned into a fully fledged cult.
