Why do people pretend to be someone they’re not?

Have you ever pretended to be someone else? Michelle hasn’t – although there was the time she told some d*ck who was hitting on her in a bar that she was rich because she produced Barbie Girl for Aqua. Does that count?

This week, Geordie and Michelle wanted to look at people who pretend to be someone else and honestly, the two cases the pair bring to the Eavesdroppin’ table are nothing alike, more than both are bizarre and strange. Totally up the Eavesdroppin’ alley, then.

So… Case Number 1 is the seemingly motiveless cases of con artist and impersonator Samantha Azzopardi. She’s Australian, she often pretends to be a 14 year old, even though she’s in her mid 30s, she often claims she’s pregnant, or a Russian gymnast or a talent scout for Pixar – and she’s confused and baffled authorities all over the world with claims that she’s a sex-trafficking victim who’s escaped from a life of abuse. It’s heartbreaking, really, when you think about it because there’s something more profoundly disturbing going on that just a woman wanting to create mischief… Best listen to the episode if you want to know more.

Then there’s the gender fraud case of Gayle Newland. If you managed to miss this one in the British news, you can catch all the details in the episode, which will include things like: Gayle pretended to be a guy called Kye to bag the girl she fancied called Chloe… And in a bizarre twist of events, which include bandages, blindfolds and handcuffs, Chloe and ‘Kye’ had SEX. And then it all gets weird from there… Sex, lies and strap-ons is all we’re gonna say.

Get listening. Get sharing. Get liking. Tell your friends but most of all, get Eavesdroppin’!
