Allen V Farrow: Remind us again why we wanted to cover this case?

When Mia Farrow accused Woody Allen in 1992 of sexually abusing their 7 year old adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, shit hit the fan. Here were two of the biggest celebrities in the world going head to head in a shocking scenario that would ruin Mia’s career, leave Dylan’s life broken and see Woody come out of it relatively unscathed.

Look, this case is so complex – there are so many things that are disturbing / don’t add up / are supremely unfair, and we really only scratch the surface of it all in our latest podcast episode. What’s really unnerving, though, more than Woody’s obsession with Dylan, the way he made her suck his thumb, and all the creepy details is the way Mia was portrayed. The predictable ‘woman scored’ label was thrown at her when it was revealed that Woody had been fucking Mia’s other adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn and that Mia made up the abuse story as some kind of revenge. And the fact that at the time, no one believed Mia or Dylan. It’s a shitty situation, coupled with the fact that Woody gaslighted not only Mia but also the world…

Looking at this case from a post #metoo perspective, there’s never been a more conducive time for this story to be re-examined and for women’s stories to be heard and believed.

We don’t have any answers. We don’t even know the truth. But we give it some chat and think about certain angles, and at the end of it all, I think we were glad to have this grubby case behind us. Because no matter what you believe, no one came out of this story better off. It’s heartbreaking. And shitty.

We do lighten the mood, though, with some Cliff Richard and Shirley Bassey anecdotes and a little reminisce about Matt Dillon and The Outsiders.

ALLEN V. FARROW: Spoiler alert! If you haven’t watched the 4-part documentary ALLEN V. FARROW… WARNING – SPOLIERS! Also, this episode makes reference to child sexual abuse, just so you know…

So… It’s the case that’s been hanging around since 1992 which has divided Hollywood and has been reignited since the #metoo movement – yes, this week we’re talking about whether or not Woody Allen abused his 7 year old adopted daughter Dylan Farrow and the Allen V. Farrow documentary… How is this a comedy podcast??

But first, the girls begin by chatting about THAT end scene in episode 5 of Line of Duty season 6, and if you don’t know the one we mean, MOTHER OF GOD get on it people! Michelle insists that Ben Mendelsohn should have a role in the next season of Line of Duty – #JedMecurio, you’ve been told! Geordie wonders if she crossed a line last week in the Adoption episode by saying her brother had a face like a pan full of fried arseholes when he was a baby. Michelle rabbits on about a bag of Little Golden Books she lost as a child… And all this before getting to the topic at hand: ALLEN V. FARROW.

Yes, we – along with most of the Western World – watched the 4 part doco Allen V. Farrow, which details the injustices and inconsistencies surrounding the child molestation accusations made by Dylan Farrow in 1992 against her adopted father Woody Allen. So Michelle starts off with an apology for any incorrect facts, before immediately saying the case kicked off in 1982 . She then gets into a potted history of the case, talks about Mia’s great haircut in Rosemary’s Baby and a brief discussion about thumb sucking and Daddy Porn. Wha?

While discussing the facts of the case, the pair chat about Woody Allen’s 16 year old lover Babi Christina and his film Manhattan. The convo then veers into a reverie for Matt Dillon, agreement that Patrick Swayze was never hot and Rob Lowe having sex in a glass elevator (*FACT it was actually Andrew McCarthy in Class – oops!) and Michelle realises she’s been saying Ralph Macchio’s name wrong her entire life . Geordie’s incredible talent for singing Cliff Richard songs comes to the fore before they get back to wrapping up their thoughts and theories on the Allen V. Farrow case. Lots to think about, so get Eavesdroppin’!
