Yes, we’ve nicked the title of a Police song for this episode (and honestly, it’s been ages since Michelle heard that song and she actually got a bit emotional when she watched the video – what a song!!! And totally had no memory of Sting shaking his booty with his bass in the video but hey ho)…

So… spirits in the material world… what does it mean? For us, ‘investigoogling’ TM psychic phenomena and the weird and wonderful is something that never gets old for us and this week was meant to be stories about psychic detectives… but ends up being about reincarnation, communicating with spirits and all the good stuff…

You know, when we put the podcast together, we sometimes talk about horrific crimes (like the piggy palace episode – soz) and it can sometimes seem surreal to think that with true crime, these were real people that had horrific things happen to them, and in this week’s episode Michelle looked at the case of Ashley Howley, who was tragically murdered. We wanted to cover this case because for 4 years, Ashley’s body had never been found and her murderer was never brought to justice. Her spirit was so troubled that she contacted a psychic to help police solve her murder and honestly, it’s a really powerful yet troubling story – let us know what you think about it. It’s not a massively covered murder and info is scarce on the ground but we found Ashley’s story moving and profound…

Geordie then went on to talk about some cases of children being inhabited by the spirits of dead people and a polaroid camera that could capture words written by the dead. Seriously. You know, part of us is always sceptical about bizarre phenomena but part of us believes that we don’t have the answers for everything in life, so have a listen and let us know what you think. Did John Huckert fake the ghostly messages in the polaroids? Is Atlas Auberry really the spirit of murdered child Jaylen Robinson? Is 5 year old Ryan Hammons really the spirit of Hollywood actor Marty Martyn? Could 2 year old James Leininger really be a world war 2 fighter pilot? We don’t have answers. We don’t know anything! But does anyone? Enjoy the episode and keep Eavesdroppin’!

Love Geordie & Michelle x

So, one day Geordie called Michelle and said, my friend Jo… And Michelle said, the Jo who saw you levitate? And Geordie said, yes, that Jo. So Geordie then says, so Jo sent me a link to a 4 Corners doco in Australia all about ScoMo (aka the Australian prime minister Scott Morrisson) and Hillsong (it’s a happy clappy religion-slash-corporation) and how there are these insidious attempts to fund religion in schools and Q-anon and well… sooooooo much more. You’re going to have to listen to find out all about it because to be honest, it’s easier to just listen than for us to go on and on about it here, more than to say we had fun making the Where The Bloody Hell Are Ya spoof trailer for the episode (below) – and for anyone who doesn’t get it, there was an Australian Tourism ad from the 90s that was kind of nuts and Scott Morrison was the marketing genius behind it… AKA SCOTTY FROM MARKETING.

So… in a nutshell here are some questions that may or may not be answered in the episode hahahah: What is Hillsong? Is it a cult? Why is Justin Bieber a Belieber? And what has any of this got to do with Scott Morrison and the Liberal party of Australia?   What is ScoMo’s connection to the Q conspiracy? Who is Tim Stewart? Why did ScoMo say ritual abuse when he shouldn’t have? And how was this man allowed to spend $186 million on Tourism Australia’s sh*ttest ad campaign ever? You’ll have to listen to find out! Enjoy the episode and keep Eavesdroppin’! 🤣

True Crime… it’s something we’re always interested in talking about and this week we we decided to talk about the Croydon Cat Killer, aka the Streatham Cat Killer, now known as the UK Cat Killer.

Honestly, this was a really hard episode to record, mainly because we both love animals (Geordie has a dog and guinea pigs and Michelle has a part-time cat she stole from her neighbours) and to think of anyone deliberately hurting animals is almost incomprehensible. Who would do that? Well, perhaps a psychopath in the making – or someone who hates cats because sadly, the cat killings are still taking place all over the UK and it seems the police are happy to simply put it down to ‘natural causes’ rather than alarm communities by admitting there is an animal serial killer on the loose.

If you think cat slaughter is grim, TRIGGER WARNING – the episode gets even grimmer…  This week Michelle details the case of Robert Pickton, Canada’s worst serial killer, who not only killed 49 women (although it’s estimated to be more… and Robert was apparently pissed he didn’t make the big 5-0 with his killings), TRIGGER WARNING – he also fed his victims to biker gangs who thought they were just enjoying a bit of slap up grub at the Piggy Palace Good Times Society. Really, you need to listen to the episode to get the full picture!!

HOW DO WE END UP TALKING ABOUT THIS SH*T?!?!!?  There are loads of TRIGGER WARNINGS this episode, but as usual, we try to keep it light when we can. Plus we talk about toilet paper… Really. It’s a problem – are you a scrunched or a folder? And does your partner accuse you of using too much??

We hope you enjoy the episode and would love to hear your feedback. If you want to read more about the episode or to listen, just click here – there are loads of links to the cases mentioned for further reading that will take you down a rabbit hole of murder…  See you next week!

Do you read newspapers? Honestly, the last time Michelle picked up a newspaper was the free one on the Tube about 2 years ago and since then… nuthin’. In fact, when Geordie asked her to do a video scrunching up a newspaper, she couldn’t even find one.

It’s not that we don’t like reading the news, it’s just that it’s not that fun to read the news. The front page is always death and crimes and someone doing something sh*tty to someone else and it all gets a bit much after a while. Michelle remembers years ago when someone told her about a Christian newspaper in the US of A that was called something like the Good News Newspaper, she thought it was ridiculous – what’s the point of only reporting the good stuff? That’s not life! But now, she gets it. You don’t need to know every bad thing that happens in the world – you only need to know the stuff you want to know.

Which leads us to the Newsdroppin’ episode! This week is all about the weird and the wonderful and the bizarre and the tragic. We combed the internet for stories that interested us – and like every Eavesdroppin’ episode, we start with a theme that goes off on a tangent before coming back on a different theme that’s loosely related to the first theme… Yes, Eavesdroppin’ is random – but hey ho, life is random.

So this week we begin with a story from Michelle about a woman who got a Tiddlywink stuck up her nose when she was a kid and didn’t find it until 37 years later. Yep. And if you’re squeamish about poop – maybe you don’t want to hear Michelle’s stories of what she’s found in the toilet bowl over the years…

We talk about UFOs and aliens and classic films and synthetic meat… It’s the future don’t cha know!

There’s the Westall case, the pool that floats between two buildings, the alien spy story and the woman who found her dead husbands Euro 96 ticket in her rolls of fat – so much more. That’s what happens when you read the news – INFORMATION OVERLOAD!

So, the best thing to do is listen to the episode – it’s much more fun that reading the news (or this blog post).

Have you ever pretended to be someone else? Michelle hasn’t – although there was the time she told some d*ck who was hitting on her in a bar that she was rich because she produced Barbie Girl for Aqua. Does that count?

This week, Geordie and Michelle wanted to look at people who pretend to be someone else and honestly, the two cases the pair bring to the Eavesdroppin’ table are nothing alike, more than both are bizarre and strange. Totally up the Eavesdroppin’ alley, then.

So… Case Number 1 is the seemingly motiveless cases of con artist and impersonator Samantha Azzopardi. She’s Australian, she often pretends to be a 14 year old, even though she’s in her mid 30s, she often claims she’s pregnant, or a Russian gymnast or a talent scout for Pixar – and she’s confused and baffled authorities all over the world with claims that she’s a sex-trafficking victim who’s escaped from a life of abuse. It’s heartbreaking, really, when you think about it because there’s something more profoundly disturbing going on that just a woman wanting to create mischief… Best listen to the episode if you want to know more.

Then there’s the gender fraud case of Gayle Newland. If you managed to miss this one in the British news, you can catch all the details in the episode, which will include things like: Gayle pretended to be a guy called Kye to bag the girl she fancied called Chloe… And in a bizarre twist of events, which include bandages, blindfolds and handcuffs, Chloe and ‘Kye’ had SEX. And then it all gets weird from there… Sex, lies and strap-ons is all we’re gonna say.

Get listening. Get sharing. Get liking. Tell your friends but most of all, get Eavesdroppin’!

Allen V Farrow: Remind us again why we wanted to cover this case? 😩

When Mia Farrow accused Woody Allen in 1992 of sexually abusing their 7 year old adopted daughter Dylan Farrow, shit hit the fan. Here were two of the biggest celebrities in the world going head to head in a shocking scenario that would ruin Mia’s career, leave Dylan’s life broken and see Woody come out of it relatively unscathed.

Look, this case is so complex – there are so many things that are disturbing / don’t add up / are supremely unfair, and we really only scratch the surface of it all in our latest podcast episode. What’s really unnerving, though, more than Woody’s obsession with Dylan, the way he made her suck his thumb, and all the creepy details is the way Mia was portrayed. The predictable ‘woman scored’ label was thrown at her when it was revealed that Woody had been fucking Mia’s other adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn and that Mia made up the abuse story as some kind of revenge. And the fact that at the time, no one believed Mia or Dylan. It’s a shitty situation, coupled with the fact that Woody gaslighted not only Mia but also the world…

Looking at this case from a post #metoo perspective, there’s never been a more conducive time for this story to be re-examined and for women’s stories to be heard and believed.

We don’t have any answers. We don’t even know the truth. But we give it some chat and think about certain angles, and at the end of it all, I think we were glad to have this grubby case behind us. Because no matter what you believe, no one came out of this story better off. It’s heartbreaking. And shitty.

We do lighten the mood, though, with some Cliff Richard and Shirley Bassey anecdotes and a little reminisce about Matt Dillon and The Outsiders.

Enjoy the episode and keep Eavesdroppin’!

OK, so this one is close to our hearts… We had this topic on our future-episode list for some time but somehow we always had other things to cover… like murder, hoarding and fairies. And then, we discussed doing a podcast on The Allen V Farrow case but we quickly realised we didn’t have enough time to re-watch the 4 episodes of the documentary before our recording day. So we decided on the spur of the moment to cover Australia’s Forced Adoption Scandal, which rocked the nation 8 years ago when then-Prime Minister Julia Gillard apologised to 250,000+ women who’d had their babies taken from them during the 1940s through to the 1970s.

It’s a shocking and heart-breaking case that was at times really heart-wrenching to research – so many of the women who were brave enough to come forward and be interviewed over the years about their experience of forced adoption spoke plainly, and often with detachment, about their pain and personal tragedies. So many broken women, so many ruined lives.

And while shining a light on this dark moment in Australian history was something we both wanted to do, the story was also deeply personal to us… because Geordie was one of the children who was taken from their birth mother and adopted out to a new loving family. And in case you’re wondering, the picture above is of Fran, Geordie’s birth mother, who we talk about in the episode.

We know forced adoption is a complex issue – from the point of view of the unwed young mothers who were coerced to give up their babies, as well as from the point of view of the families who adopted the children. The cultural landscape at the time did not support young unmarried mothers and their options were limited. The government did not want the financial burden of these children to fall on the state. Loving families who couldn’t have children were desperate to adopt. It seemed like a win all round. But like we said, the issue is complex:  the situation is difficult to comprehend when looking at it through the lens of today’s cultural norms and institutionalised governmental financial support for single parents but we gave it a red hot go!

And I’m sure if you listen to the episode you’ll be moved by the plight of the women we talk about in the episode and also Geordie’s very personal story.

We hope you find the episode enlightening. Please like, share, subscribe, tell your friends, spread the word and all that – and keep Eavesdroppin’!

Poltergeists: We love a scary story and it doesn’t get much scarier than these three crazy ghost stories, all set in London, all about to scare the tits off ya!

So, we start off with the weird tale of Alma Fielding and the Thornton Heath Poltergeist… it’s from 1930 and we dug up the front page of the newspaper from the time that covered the story and it was a crazy tale even back then! Kudos to journo Kate Summescale for great investigative work!!

The Thornton Heath Poltergeist

It starts off with a bored housewife who contacted her local police station to tell them that weird things were happening at her home. They told her to all back after the pubs had shut because they thought she was off her nut… So she called back and eventually they took her seriously and came round. They were stumped – what the actual F was going on??? It was too weird for them and they told her they couldn’t do anything… so they went to the papers and that’s when Alma’s story hit the headlines. This story is super interesting to us because there are several layers here… First of all, according to reports the 1930s was a time when the world was still reeling from the loss of loved ones from WW1 and also the flu pandemic from just after the war broke out. These things apparently led to a rise in the supernatural and people wanting to make contact with loved ones they’d lost and Alma’s story struck a chord at just the right time. Then there was speculation as to the source of Alma’s spooky happenings – was Alma’s house really haunted or was she simply projecting repressed memories… Listen to the episode to hear more about it!

The Enfield Haunting

We then look at the super famous case of The Enfield Haunting… Specifically, the BBC show The Reunion and how the people who were involved in the case during the 1970s – and who were still alive – came together to talk about one of the most bizarre chapters of their lives! We hear all about the two Peggys, 11 year old Janet Hodgson and a foul mouthed entity called Bill Wilkins who seems to be in love with Janet and how he haunted their lives for 18 months…

The Battersea Poltergeist

So… another super famous case where Donald the poltergeist haunted Shirley Hitchings and her family for  more than 12 YEARS!!!! Tapping, hammer toes, flying objects and media skepticism all kept the case alive for more than a decade, but at the end of it all, who really knows whether Donald was real or not. I’d like to thing he was real. I’d love to think ALL poltergeists are real. And I’d especially like to think that one day I’ll meet a friendly one who makes me laugh and tells me the lottery numbers.

We hope you like the ep! Please like, share, subscribe, tell your friends, spread the word and all that – and keep Eavesdroppin’!

HOARDERS! I don’t know why but we’ve capped up that word on practically all our socials, I think because the word says it all. No explanation needed. Except, we’re going to explain a little bit…

So, first of all, if you haven’t listened to the episode, you can do so here.

Now, Michelle was the one that wanted to take a look at hoarders as a concept, mainly because of a small but significant experience that stayed with her from childhood. Also because her sister is obsessed with the TV show Hoarders, plus it’s a show they both watched together, late at night, with a G&T after her kids had gone to bed on Michelle’s trips back to Australia… Good times 🤣🤣 So the concept was close to her heart…  But seriously, hoarding is such a complex issue with so many layers that we decided to take a little delve into the psychology of it before finding bizarre cases that mystified us.

What’s really interesting to us is that we saw that hoarding can occur in very specific ways, like Michelle’s story about Terry the cat hoarder or Shanna the Poop hoarder, or general hoarding of pretty much all and everything, like Geordie’s story about the Honeycheck sisters who just had a house full of, well, junk. Then there’s tiny instances of hoarding, like Michelle’s previous clothes hoarding (or was it just lots of clothes and lots of space to keep them? Or attachment issues? Who knows!) or the case of the jar full of mysterious mossy water that ended up in Geordie’s yard (listen to get the full picture), which means you can have small hoarding tendencies without being a hoarder… See! Told you the issue was complex!

Of course, we’re not psychologists and it’s all just thoughts and theories, but we give it a red hot go at looking into different angles and giving it our own Eavesdroppin’ spin. Apologies have to go out to listeners, though who may find the animal hoarding story upsetting… It’s grim. Really grim. And we’re not laughing at the liquefied cat so much as being so at the edge of understanding the why of it all that our reaction was a laugh or cry moment. So let’s be clear that we love animals. It was just a beyond- comprehension thing!!!

Thanks to all the listeners who sent us comments about the episode and links and comments – we’d never even thought about Mia Farrow and Angelina Jolie as children hoarders but it’s a great point! Also to another listener who sent in a great story they’d read about what triggers hoarding – so fascinating.

I’m sure we’ll do another hoarders story in the future so if you have any ideas or cases you’d like us to cover, let us know! Until then… Keep eavesdroppin’!

xxx

When we were growing up in Australia, being into witchcraft, crystals, tarot, seances and anything supernatural was really normal. A sign of the times? A cultural phenomenon? Who knows… It’s just that everyone we knew had some kind of attraction to, affinity with or at the very least, a curiosity for spirituality and the supernatural. In some ways it has informed our lives and although we never chose those paths as careers or even for ongoing practice, a fascination with all things spiritual, divine, witchy and wonderful has made our lives richer. So in the week’s episode, we talk all things witchy-woo! Like most of our episodes, we look at different angles and come together to chat and this week’s episode is no different – while researching, Michelle went down the rabbit hole of modern witchcraft, witch influencers, witchcraft true crime and feminism, while Geordie recounts the story of a woman who bought a house that had previously been a jail for witches… with terrifying consequences. We don’t claim to know everything about witchcraft. We haven’t even scratched the surface, but we just have a little chat about witchy things and we hope you enjoy it! Happy listening.
